Ethridge Knight Jr. (son of Etheridge Sr. and Belzora Cozart Knight) was born in Corinth, Mississippi, on 19 April 1931. He grew up in Corinth and Paducah, Kentucky, attended local schools and dropped out after the eighth grade. He joined the United States Army in 1947. He was wounded during the Korean Conflict and developed an addiction to drugs and alcohol. Randall, Dudley, 1914-2000

Dudley Randall (1914-2000) created the Broadside Press in 1965 in Detroit (Mich.). He ran the press out of his home on limited funds, managing to publish the major African-American poetry of the period. Randall supported himself as a librarian at the University of Detroit. He put all profits back into the press. In 1978, Black Enterprise magazine called Randall "The father of the black poetry movement." He sold the press in 1985. Randall died in Aug. 2000.
